Windward Islands at a Glance

The Windward Islands feature gorgeous beaches, dramatic volcanoes and a fascinating mix of people, languages and culture.

Martinique is fashionable and French. Don't be caught under-dressed here unless you are exploring the slopes of Mt. Pelee, Martinique's still smoking volcano.

For surfing, head to Barbados, where winds whip up big waves and secluded inlets make swimming possible for the less adventurous.

For a quaint feel, visit Grenada where tourists walk town boardwalks, explore colonial buildings and hike mountains. You won't find too many big resorts here, but B&Bs provide fun, personalized lodgings.

At Carnival time head to Trinidad and Tobago. With great music, delicious food and a lively festival you won't want to miss a thing.

Need to Know

Severe Weather June to November is the Atlantic Hurricane season. Travelers during this time may encounter anything from increased thunderstorms and rain to violent tropical storms and hurricanes.

Safety Concerns Each island and area has its own safety concerns so it's a good idea to research before you go. Use your common sense and avoid leaving items unattended on the beach and in cars. Avoid flashing cash and keep your passport stowed in a hotel safe or in a money belt.

Health Concerns Travelers to the Windward Islands should purify local water before drinking it in most locations. Speak with your doctor at least two months before your trip to schedule any needed immunizations and to discuss health concerns. Insect repellent, sunscreen and plenty of water will keep travelers healthy and comfortable in the Caribbean heat.
