Oakland at a Glance

Oakland is an artistic and cultural hub across the bay from San Francisco. In fact, the city has the highest number of artists per capita in the U.S. The city is famous for its music scene; many West Coast jazz, hip hop and rap artists call Oakland home.

Oakland began its history as a port city and today it is still the fifth largest port in the United States. Visit Oakland to check out the California Museum or catch a musical performance at the Fox Theater. Merritt Lake, near downtown, is an estuary housing rare birds and wildlife and makes for an interesting visit for bird lovers.
