Mount Zao is the largest active volcano in northern Honshu, consisting of many stratovolcanoes. It was nicknamed the “Five Color Pond” because of the vibrant colors the pond changes as a result of fluctuating weather. During the colder months, strange snow monsters – or vertical icicle-like masses formed from strong winds – form on trees surrounding the aqua-blue waters of Crater Lake.
